Online existence
I tried three other web hosts before I settled on my current one, Lunar Pages. I highly recommend it if you are looking for a web host. Specifically, you can check out the plans they offer.
I use GoDaddy for my domain name registrar.
Applications
Apache - Apache Software Foundation
Apache powers the web server.
Dreamweaver MX 2004 - Macromedia
It's expensive, but worth it. Besides, a few hours of paid web dev work pays for it.
Hermes Email server - Alixoft, LLC
Hermes on my
local computer enables me to test email-related scripts.
MySQL.
MySQL powers the site's database.
PHP.
PHP powers the scripts on my site.
WinMerge.
WinMerge, a diff viewer is a life saver when trying
to figure out differences between different file versions.

Resources
Eric Meyer on CSS. - Eric Meyer
He truly is the CSS master. As much as W3 schools helped with CSS, Eric Meyer fleshed out my CSS education.
The book is in color so it's also pretty to look at.
PHP and MySQL: for Dynamic Web Sites. - Larry Ullman
I learned a lot of my PHP and MySQL from Larry Ullman's books. My contact script was built upon a book example.
PHP and MySQL Web Development. - Luke Welling & Laura Thomson
This is a more advanced book. Not appropriate for beginners since it goes through the easy stuff quickly.
W3 Schools.
Most of my CSS training came from W3 Schools' free CSS tutorial.
